Human civilization has been traced back nearly 10,000 years with
inhabitants coming from Asia and Indonesia. In the 15th Century
the first Europeans visited the island, but it was not until the
19th Century when the Dutch took control of the western half of
the island. In 1884, the southern half of the island came under
British rule and in 1905 it was transferred to Australia. The
northern half of the island came under German domination, but was
captured by Australia after World War I. Australia administered
the island until September 16, 1975 when the country became fully
independent. The population of the island consists of many
different tribes, living in complete isolation from each other
with mutually un-intelligible languages. @
